Episode Transcript of of Chocolate Chip Cookies w/ Rice Krispies
today we're making a recipe with an ingredient that most of us enjoyed while we watched our Saturday morning cartoons ooh is a Captain Crunch with crunch berries and you ate so much of it that it tore the skin off the roof of your mouth no but me thinks you will like it [Music] welcome to Mom's Wooden Spoon get your apron on and your fanny flicker ready as we cook up some nostalgia ooh yummy
hey everybody today we are making chocolate chip cookies with Rice Krispies in them in honor of national Cookie Monster Day oh what a fun day I know right I love Cookie Monster me too hey did you know that Cookie Monster actually has a real live first name no is it Edgar no it's Sid Sid monster I suppose so cookie is just his nickname I think so because the real Cookie Monster put out a tweet in 2022. oh you don't say I do say and this is what it said did you know me name is Sid but me still like to be called Cookie Monster oh how cute isn't that the cutest thing ever I would say other than Grover he's the cutest he is super super cute and I love it when he eats cookies really fast and his googly eyes get spinning oh and all the cookie pieces are flying nom nom nom nom just adorbs so fun yeah so we thought this would be a great treat I think we told you before that we picked a lot of desserts this season and this would be one of them it is huh huh I will confess that when I first looked at this recipe yeah the name of the recipe I thought we were gonna make like a bar and it was going to be a chocolate chip cookie bar right combined with by I don't know the magic of science a rice crispy bar right and so I thought it was going to be like two bars combined into one yeah and that sounded very exciting to me it is this is not as exciting but it sounds delicious it's your basic chocolate chip cookie recipe with Rice Krispies tossed in yeah and if you're not a fan of nuts in your chocolate chip cookies and I am not no it's a great way to get a little crunch that's what Mary says in your chocolate chip cook yes and speaking of what Mary says this Mary's memo she goes on a tirade she does I have never seen the likes of this she had some very strong feelings about the Ohio Ohio State Fair she was completely disgusted with the food choices of 1976 Ohio State Fair so this recipe of course is from 1976 uh September 6th so that would make sense right around when the Ohio State Fair is going on she said that you know she walked through the booths and was basically horrified that people would put these foods in their body yes and where were the healthy options like popcorn and carrot sticks because I know when I go to the fair I am just jonesing for some carrot sticks heck yeah and one of her other choices that she thought would be lovely is a tossed salad with Marzetti dressing shut up I didn't see that part yeah no she does concede that eating junk food in moderation is quote not injurious to the health of a normal person oh but you know what she called out as being some of the bad food yeah Pringles I know like did they not have deep fried Twinkies and Oreos where was the cotton candy for her to mention I know right how about a funnel cake well she was really really pleased with the Ohio poultrys Association barbecue chicken dinner oh fantastic diabetic was barbecue chicken and carrot sticks with a tasty side salad and some Marzettis Marzetti's is that what mom loves to make coleslaw with yes Marzetti has a has a coleslaw dressing this is yeah and this is our mom's favorite coleslaw recipe in the whole wide world and uh get out your notebook because you're going to want to write this one down it's gonna be complicated you buy bagged coleslaw mixture you know the cabbage is already cut finely for you yeah for you yeah and you buy Marzetti's coleslaw dressing and you combine them oh that is so hard and then you pass it off as your own are you guys going to remember this because if not we can take some notes on the website oh good idea yeah complicated one it's a tough one but it actually is pretty darn good it's kind of like taking the uh the frozen pie letting it thaw making the crust look like it's handmade cooking and passing it off on your own you know what she's got a theme she does she's real sneaky and good at it oh yeah well you know Mary does finish up her whole tirade about eating poor quality food with a question so I'm gonna pose this to everyone who's listening fantastic she says are you making wise choices no the answer is no no I am not no we are not we are going to eat the heck out of these chocolate chip cookies with rice krispie treats correct from 1976. yes yes we are are you holding your hand up because you wanted a high five no I I a very demonstrative today Carrie okay I was saying from 1976 and I was kind of going let's go she did she had her hand up held very close to my face and I thought this doesn't feel like a high five moment it's not but am I leaving her hanging I don't know why we need to do like a video podcast because I'm so daggone demonstrative that you guys really miss out on all these beautiful subtleties they're not subtle I have to dodge and weave as we cook before going off on the poor food choices at the Ohio State Fair she also mentions that she really liked this recipe she's been a big fan of Rice Krispie treats oh yeah since the recipe was placed on the box oh yes you know it just I don't know that tickled my fancy because it's one of those things that in my mind is just always been Rice Krispie treats they've always been right they've just been since the Advent of the Rice Krispie that's right and so the fact that somebody remembers a day without a Rice Krispie Treat what a sad sad day yeah I found it quite fascinating so I decided I probably ought to look up and see what that day was oh did you I'm glad you looked it up because I didn't I did so the Rice Krispie Treat was created in the 30s really yes but like so many things that are created it took a long time before anybody to kind of take off yeah and so it wasn't until the 40s that you would find one of the earliest published versions which much to my surprise and pleasure was found in the Akron Beacon Journal from Akron Ohio you're kidding me true story that is so neat and it was published December 2nd 1940. wow I thought that was really neat so it has Ohio roots in that regard I love it and you know Rice Krispie treats are so modifiable yes they're so good yes are you a sprucer of the rice krispie treats I will tell you one spruce that I adore and so does our dad our dad actually who does not cook can make these he loves to make these so the scotcharoos oh yeah oh my gosh every Christmas so those have peanut butter right and um butterscotch chips so yummy he made scotcharoos one year he is not really sure what happened but they came out hard as a brick yeah and he did not realize that until he'd already given some to his neighbor so he had to go back and warn the neighbor to not eat the scotcharoos don't eat those don't eat those because you'll break a tooth that is a hoot yeah you know I don't know if anybody will notice when you go to the webpage and take a look at the picture of all the ingredients for this but the box of Rice Krispies is open because Kristen had to have a bowl of it for old times sake right and so I did and it was pretty good the typical thing that happened is I put sugar on the top of it and then ended up with an entire bowl of syrupy goodness at the bottom and no cereal right which is funny because I was watching an old TV ad I thought I'm going to research Rice Krispies sure and the Monkees were actually advertising Rice Krispies yep and so they show all the Monkees put up a folding table they're all sitting down and they're pouring their Rice Krispies and Davy Jones yes the most adorable of all the Monkees I mean he is so adorbs so what he does is he puts sugar at the bottom of the bowl okay and then he pours milk on top of that and then he pours the Rice Krispies on top of that and then he puts another Bowl on top of that and flips the whole thing over oh that's funny isn't that funny I thought well that's clever I'm sure our mother is glad we never saw that ad oh as a kid trying to do that those oh the mess I used to because I didn't like that and then it would all go to the bottom yeah so I learned to put the Rice Krispies in pour the milk on yeah and then put the sugar on which is the sugar would yeah attach to the milk that was on their Rice Krispies it didn't fix it but it helped because when I first started doing it I just put the sugar on drink and it would all go down to the bottom immediately yeah now I have been talking so much that I'm really hoping that I have accurately measured the flour I think I have put one and three quarters cup in there um we're hoping I'm pretty sure I did great I'm pretty sure I did yeah but I was so excited to tell you guys about Davey Jones because um I I love him that I got a little excited and stopped counting you know I would make fun of you except I've done that you have done that and I harassed you mocked me mocked me mercilessly I really did mercilessly all right so what we need to do is add all the dry ingredients in this bowl and kind of mix them up and so I'm looking for a teaspoon for us to put the baking soda in I have it right here all right and while she does that I'm gonna throw some butter and sugar in case you uh were an avid listener to season one it's boob butter oh yeah I forgot to thaw the daggone butter and so y'all know what I did I stuck it in the bra works like a charm it's what she does it is ready to go all right half teaspoon of the salt I have to confess Kristen that um after last season and the boob butter I was baking and I needed room temperature eggs I stuck them in my bra as well my daughter walked in she's like what are you doing I bet that looked really weird I am sure all right so I've mixed together the flour the soda and salt we're gonna set that aside and then what we have to do is we have to cream the margarine we're using butter uh and the sugars so let's see what we need we need three quarters cup of the brown sugar and three quarters of granulated do you want to do the granulated sure so I was looking up the Ohio State Fair in 1976 yeah and I came up on a list of who was singing on the grandstand that year oh yeah it was pretty exciting stuff some of them I was really confused by so let's see if you know some of these people and we'll see if all our listeners know who the heck we're talking about okay okay the Osmonds of course and sharing the stage with the Osmonds Munch nope is that a person or a band or I did not know so I looked and I looked at all I could find was somebody's blog who had attended a State Fair in Minnesota or something in 1976 and saw the Osmonds singing with Munch they are apparently a Canadian band who wore brown and white tuxedos wow fancy fancy it's all I could find about Munch huh and they toured with the Osmonds in 1976. they did all right I mean good on them and then the next day KC and the Sunshine Band nice which is perfect because their shake shake shake shake shake shake shake your booty was the most popular song on September 6 1976 which is when this recipe came out wow way to tie it all together with a pretty little bow Kristen I know and you guys couldn't see it but I was doing a let's go motion with my hand she was which nobody knows what that motion is but that would be the index finger doing a large swoop and pointing into the air yeah and it is one of her signature moves folks it is indeed all right so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna start creaming the butter and sugar okay and I'm gonna stand here and look cute and next comes two eggs and a teaspoon or maybe a little more of vanilla all right the butter and the sugars and the egg and vanilla are all creamed it looks so pretty yay Yum Yum Yum and so now we just have to add in the dry ingredients right and the chocolate chips oh that's right yeah we're gonna save the Rice Krispies to do them by hand so we don't decimate them in the electric mixer okay sounds perfect I'm gonna add that in all right first of all you were beating everything together I was busy winning sister of the year award what did you do I have cleaned everything up welcome to your nice clean workspace courtesy of yours truly oh my gosh thank you so much I know it's the first time I've ever done that oh you are so nice to me thank you this is so good and you know what I did it was especially nice for you I can't even imagine well you know we were supposed to use six ounces of chocolate chips and I could not find a six ounce bag so I got the 12 ounce bag and I may have added a few more than six ounces yes I have to tell you the funniest thing so I'm leaving the house today to come over here to record this and my husband says what are you guys making so I I told him and he looks at me and he goes so have you made those cookies before I'm like no why would I be making them for did your ex-wife make these he's like yeah you are kidding me oh my gosh he can't remember right so he's trying to be all sly but I was it you not me it was the ex so I was like well did you like them and he said well you take this moist chewy delicious cookie yeah and add something that sucks all the moisture out to it so they're dry and crunchy oh he was not a fan at all well and so then I asked I was like well I like maybe you know maybe she just overcooked them yeah and because you know it's the ex-wife let's throw it on her right yeah and he's like well maybe when you first take them out of the oven they're kind of soft and you think that they're going to be good but after they cool they're crunchy like Chips Ahoy I hate Chips Ahoy Carrie oh no well note to us then we're gonna cook these a few minutes less than what they say I'm just saying according to my spouse under cooking may be the way to go it might be and I'll tell you what this has two sticks of butter in it yeah so that's gonna be a pretty moist I would think well you know I don't know I can't say I've never made them so two cups of the Krispies right yes these are definitely the cheap version those are some of the flattest Rice Krispies I have ever seen in my life you know what remember how I told you that I poured myself a bowl of them uh-huh not my fave no no they're uh they're definitely Genero I would not mix and talk at the same time because that is loud and crunchy okay well we'll talk to you guys in a minute okay [Music] it is kind of dry there's very little batter left after I mixed in the Rice Krispies but it smells good get a whiff of that smells so almost malty like Rice Krispies smell kind of you're right it does look dry yeah uh oh I hope your hubby was not right and then he's just bitter well those are gently folded in and so now let's take a peek at what we need to do this is going to make six dozen cookies and we have to drop them by teaspoonfuls onto a lightly greased baking sheet and then we'll bake it in a 350 oven for 10 minutes but I think we're going to bake it in a 350 oven for maybe eight maybe a few less yeah I'd absolutely do less all right all right well we'll give this a try looking at your bootleg cheap box I noticed that it says pop crack wow but it's supposed to say snap crackle pop uh which they probably can't for copyright reasons but so as I was thinking about today and the Rice Krispies Treats yeah I was looking up you know the elves yeah I assumed that Rice Krispies were made by Keebler and then snap crackle and pop were all a part of the Keebler Elf family I did not realize that snap crackle and pop are elves that totally separate they're from a separate elf tribe they are their own thang than Keebler Elves so then if you start looking online there are people debating who would take who in a fight The Keebler Elves versus snap crackle and pop what did they determine well it was to each their own oh I decided it'd be the Keebler elves because there seemed to be a crap ton of them that's true and there's only snap crackle and pop but then I learned yeah there's more to snap crackle and pop than meets the eye they are more than Chef sleep hat and band uh Shaco was Shaco Shaco that's the band hat is called a Shaco Idid not know that yeah those of us who have children in the band you know that you knew Shaco yeah whoa I learned it last year that's impressive anyway there's more to it so sit back and enjoy this little lesson about the not Keebler elves snap crackle and pop I'm nervous are they gangsters or no snap is the oldest so he's what he's the Kristen of the trio and he's a problem solver yeah there's more somebody had way too much time on their hands crackle is an unsure quote middle child oh and pop is the mischievous youngster oh you're pop I'm pop we don't have a crackle we do not have a crackle because there's only two of us speaking of crackle though don't you love Krackle candy bars oh my gosh the way you said it I was like do you have a crush on Crackle the elf but no I flippin love I know you do Krackle candy bars I know you do just plain chocolate candy bar it's a little too much chocolate for me I need something to break it up and a nice little Rice Krispie in the chocolate yeah is exactly what I think it needs pretty tasty did you know that they they stopped making Krackle candy bars what no I'm I'm for real I mean obviously I don't eat a lot of them this came as a surprise to me wait a minute when was the last time I ate Hershey's miniatures because Krackles always came in those with Mr Goodbar yeah so what happened is okay the Krackle bar came out in 1938 yeah before the advent of the rice krispie treats yes okay they had it forever it was discontinued in 1997 except as a miniature you are kidding me nope and then due to popular demand it came back in 2014. so there are Krackle bars they're just the minis now I think you can find a real full-size Krackle bar because we are past the year 2014. okay but between 1997 and 2014 which sadly is a lot longer ago than you initially think that was it really is yeah they no the only way you could get it was as a miniature oh my goodness yeah how about that that's crazy I know I didn't even know that I was missing out on the Krackle candy well I thought I was losing my ever-loving mind because I could have sworn I had a Krackle miniature yeah you have okay yeah and is it because you bought like Halloween candy and ate the whole freaking bag all by myself and kudos to you for not buying the bootleg mix I know I'm proud of myself nothing but dum-dums and Sweet Tarts I may buy crispy rice cereal pop crack wow but I go for the a delicious a name brand chocolate a girl's gotta have her standards oh yeah well you know some of my cookies I think are a little bit smaller than yours maybe I should add a little more well you have dough you're supposed to do a teaspoon it said and so Kristen has this handy dandy little teaspoon that has a silicone back and she just pops it out I have two spoons yeah trying to make them make them work yeah so I add a little bit more to mine although we know what happens when Kristen keeps adding dough to the cookies do you remember the Amish sugar cookies we made that were so huge that we needed a platter to fit a single one on and we had to cut them apart so they were like these are random square-ish not really cookies yeah yeah Kristen goes a little crazy I do so maybe this is better what I'm doing here yeah yeah okay so 1976. I have a question for you because you would have been three I would have been six what do you think was the most popular girls toy in 1976 and I will give you a hint I sang like this person on our last episode well clearly Adam Lambert Adam Lambert doll you got it or Cher you got it the Cher doll outsold Barbie in 1976 really yep I'll be doggone can you imagine how rich Cher is no kidding and how well it would have sold if you could have pulled a string and she would have sang Muffin Man o m g I know right hey Kristen yeah how does that song go I I don't know that I'm familiar with it you are baiting me I'm moving on I can't believe she took that up if you ever wondered if Kristen had willpower yeah that right there oh yeah insane quantities I'm afraid that if I sing it then again it'll get stuck in my head and y'all will hate me so let's talk a little bit about another toy that was the most popular toy in 1976 we did not have this but I sometimes wish I did it would have been really nice to have on our steep driveway not a rock tumbler because you had one of those you lucky lucky girl I never used it but yes um well we had big wheels so this is along the same lines it was the green machine oh yes I remember them yeah do you remember those where you'd have you take the handles and you kind of pump them back and forth I remember those to steer right yes yeah yes so cool and now they have lawn mowers that are like giant motorized Green Machines because they've got the arm controls like that that's right oh man um you know the lawnmower company really missed out they should have made them green they should have and called it the green machine they should have I wanted to tell you because I was enjoying looking at all these 1976 toys so much yeah I actually found the entire 1976 Sears Christmas book online no oh my gosh I had so much fun oh my I remember going through that oh yeah do you remember the boring side yeah was like clothes and stuff that you did not care about oh yeah and then you'd have to turn it over and upside down I don't remember that part you don't no oh my gosh so you'd be looking at the clothing side yeah yeah so you'd have to like hold it yeah I know what you're talking about and flip it yeah and then the toy side would be right side up that is so cool yeah I did notice well this was all you know uploaded online so there was all PDFs and you can flip through it like it's a book but yeah you had to flip through some pretty groovy looking clothes before you got to the toys right oh and there were some cool pajamas too but in reality you didn't have to because you just flipped that sucker then start on the toy side and stop when you got to the groovy clothes and they were some groovy clothes it was so fun there were so many toys that we had or I wanted that I will put the link or I'll give it to Carrie to put on our website so you guys can go through it so we have our first batch out of the oven there is no way we're getting six there's no way we're getting six dozen uh no Carrie with the two tablespoons went a little crazy and they're big they're big and because they have butter in them they spread so they're real thin so I can see why they've would have been more like Chips Ahoy but we cut the baking time down by what two minutes two minutes they're gorgeous they have golden brown edges and then the middles still look kind of moist so we are hoping that as they sit the middles will be a little more cooked yeah I can't stop thinking about this um Sears catalog I mean the number of evenings between October and November whenever it came out oh yeah I would go to bed and just look through that just the joy of dreaming all of the things that could be I remember dog earing the pages I remember that too I was gonna say that that was so fun and even if you didn't get the things you asked for it was still just fun looking just knowing that such amazing things existed in the world oh yeah so some of the toys that they had okay were Tigger and Pooh Weeble wobbles okay I loved Weeble Wobbles they're actually just called Weebles but I can't call them Weebles well cause they weeble and they wobble but they don't fall down exactly yeah and then they had the Honey Tree they went with those oh wow so fun that's awesome oh yeah and then of course one that is perfect for what we're doing today they had a talking Cookie Monster doll no they did however it was lame what do you mean it didn't say me love cookies it said monster loves cookies okay so do you think that Cookie Monster referring to himself as me as something that evolved and that maybe he wasn't doing in the 70s like that could be that's a curious question okay well this is really interesting the I think the cookies are going to be the perfect texture the middles are still looking kind of moist but you know as cookies sit and cool those kind of firm up but I think they're going to be crispy and moist I we'll wait and see I'm gonna say they're going to be crispy you know what looks so weird though the Rice Krispies in there you can't tell what they are they sure don't look like nuts you know what it looks like no cottage cheese it kind of does it gives a funky texture to the cookie she also had us grease the cookie sheets yeah which I don't do I usually you know parchment or something so it's kind of odd I wonder if that changed the way they cooked maybe and then just like we said with the Amish sugar cookies we may have had better results had we refrigerated the cookies first we got a lot of spread but I don't know looking at them all cooked and on the cookie sheets I think they're looking I think they look delicious looking pretty good yeah we certainly have left them on the cookie sheet longer than the one minute that she suggests yeah they're way too thin and smooshy you can actually just tell by the color yeah in the middle of the cookie that they're just gonna fold all up on yeah so I think probably if we had cooked them the full amount of time we would have had to have taken them off after one minute or they would have been too cooked but since we undercooked them we have to wait a little bit yeah they just rip the shreds yeah yep most of these look beautiful I want you to tell me what's wrong with this particular cookie one sad little cookie with one chocolate chip just one one little measly chip these have a gazillion and this one has one there's one that's so lumpy bumpy with 8 million chocolate chips and then this one oh it looks like a little baby with one little tooth it does just the one chocolate chip oh my goodness oh these spread and got brown these got very brown all right well we are going to get these off let these cool a little bit and then we will come back and talk you through how delicious or disappointing they are crunchy or I don't know it's gonna say juicy but that's gross crunchy or creamy no juicy or no janky juicy or janky that's it folks we'll see you in a minute [Music] oh boy these look gorgeous they really turned out pretty good they're very flat they're golden but I think they're going to be chewy so I'm gonna go for the first bite this time let's break it oh it's chewy and they're cool they're not super warm okay so maybe let's see definitely cook it less let's see how we like them I love these really take a bite they are buttery chewy crunchy so I decided to take the browner one which was more cooked and it is still also very soft in the middle I'm so glad we cooked these less I mean they're not the prettiest looking cookie ever but they're tasty what do you think they are and I would really recommend don't get the bootleg Rice Krispies yeah I just think the visual of the smaller Rice Krispie and that like football shape yeah instead of this large flat one because it is odd looking to see them inside of the cookie you know I don't know that they're my favorite really I really like them I don't find that the Rice Krispies offer much of a crunch oh huh I'm feeling like they do the only trouble for me is that visually they look like they're made with large curd cottage cheese yeah well maybe you'll have to try and make it for yourself and then let us know what you think that's right are you team Kristen it's worth it or team Carrie it's okay and as usual learn from our mistakes I'd probably refrigerate the dough I would probably of course cook them less um what else did we decide that might be a helpful hint use non bootleg use non-bootleg rice krispie treats and I think they're delightful they're very different I think little children would really like them I think you should email us and let us know that you agree with me yeah or me but mostly me yes and me and then there's me yep and if you don't agree with Kristen I'm going to sic snap crackle and pop on you and they're gonna beat you down with a Shaco with yeah a band hat we're gonna get you I'm gonna put on my naptime sleepy hat and beat your booty and my gang of Keebler elves are gonna protect me oh my gosh well I think it's a winner Carrie so much but it certainly isn't a big time loser no either way it's okay well happy National Cookie Monster day yes C is for cookie that's good enough for me thanks so much for joining us you are not going to want to miss our next episode in which we revealed the
