Episode Transcript for Delicious Beef Brownies

if you were going to make a sweet treat what would be one ingredient that you would never even consider adding oh oh eggplant oh well today's recipe is going to absolutely blow your mind and hopefully it won't make you also blow chunks so it does have eggplant in it well [Music] welcome to Mom's Wooden Spoon get your apron on and your fanny flicker ready as we cook up some Nostalgia ooh yummy well Carrie today's recipe I think is going to be the craziest one we have ever made I could not agree with you more I know this is this is cringe it is so cringe that I am actually going to be scared to try it really yeah okay so I don't know that I have fear but I will say I have a deep hesitation absolutely yeah yeah well the weird thing is I found this cookbook which it's not a Mary's Memo okay I found the cookbook in a thrift store in Dawsonville Georgia oh okay yeah and I was looking through it and the picture on the front looked really 70s so it it drew me to it and it then said the title is called back to the farm with beef oh all right yeah cool I thought okay that sounds really neat but then it said by the Buckeye Cowbelles oh and I thought Buckeye wait I'm in Georgia Buckeyes are from Ohio could this be an Ohio cookbook and I look through and yes indeed it is how cool is that yes apparently the Buckeye Cow belles they are an auxiliary of the Ohio Cattleman's Association so it's the girl version of the cattle man's Association well now it is but back in the day they were basically the wives of the farmers okay and they were there to be of assistance to and to work alongside sure and so I mean they still exist today but they're not called the Cowbelles anymore they're called the Ohio cattle women sure of course right well I feel like I am really well prepared for today's recipe then because I went to a rodeo last night oh how perfect yes and so I feel like I have just been one with Cattlemen and women I think you have yeah yes did you eat anything that was beefy um I had a funnel cake that was not beefy at all no and what we're making today shouldn't be beefy at all either Carrie interesting so it's not loaded french fries one of my faves it is not it's not a beef roast I mean this recipe book had lots of delicious beef recipes yeah which I was really excited to try but not this one today in honor of national chocolate brownie day we're making delicious beef brownies huh yeah so now you all can sit in our hesitation beef Brownies so literally we are going to put beef yes into brownies we are indeed so here is hoping that the power of chocolate prevails oh here's hoping I don't feel like there's enough chocolate in world to prevail yeah yeah okay speaking of chocolate I need to back up just a little bit okay all right so you mentioned that we are today in celebration of national chocolate brownie day which leads me to the question is there a brownie that is not chocolate oh is that not just redundant and repetitive well there are oh but they're called blondies they are indeed if it's chocolate it's a brownie if it's not chocolate it's a blondie so that is redundant I suppose and repetitive and repetitive uhhuh wow yeah so just happy National brownie day I think that sounds so much better I well you know it's correct and it is not happy National Beef brownie day it is not I mean talk about putting a new and interesting spin ooh new and interesting in 1973 when this recipe book came out oh my gosh I feel like every body needs to be prepared to celebrate National chocolate brownie day yes with some beef brownies to their poor unsuspecting families it's good for them we're going to up the protein I agree right and in celebration of Carrie's birth year oh my gosh this could just be a special special treat for sure for sure and I'll tell you what though I would way way rather eat these chocolate beef brownies than I would some of the other beef Confections that they had in this book so there were more than one beef related dessert there actually was an entire section I mean I'm curious how hard these auxiliary women had to work to come up with beef dessert or maybe it's a thing I mean maybe when you live on a ranch and that is what you do yeah you just come up with multiple ways to utilize your cash crop that's true I don't know well maybe now these sound really really more scary than beef brownies right so we went with the lesser of the evils oh we certainly did so one was beef sugar plums sounds just like something's going to get stuck in your teeth I would not have visions of sugar plums Dancing in my Head if they really were made of beef all the time I mean that could be like a beef sugar plum Mosh Pit ooh  yeah yeah no so the beef sugar plums had an entire cup of ground cooked beef in in them and then it's like all kind of mashed together with graham cracker crumbs so it's not really cooked it's the mouth feel oh yeah I think really is what kind of runs into problems yeah they actually did not recommend using ground beef which I just naturally assumed ground beef brownies would be ground beef like Hamburg right yeah I mean it certainly says that you want ground beef right ground cooked beef but then as I read a little further it actually said that it works best with leftover roast okay right so what I did in my fear of eating these beef brownies I did a little bit of research on the best roast to use when you don't want any fat in it because God forbid we bite into a big piece of brownie and you get a lump of fat and gristle right right and then I also found which roast tastes the least like beef isn't that funny be flavor right and so I'm doing all this research and I'm thinking oh my gosh I have to tell our listening audience which would be the best beef roast to use well because we all know they're going to rush right out and make these that's exactly what then I thought this is just guidance right why why would I tell people this because nobody cares because nobody's making this I feel like you've totally misjudged our listening audience really you guys might okay well then I suggest you get a rump roast I cut a portion off of it I cooked it in the crock pot till it was tender then when it was cool I cut it into cubes I froze the cubes for 20 minutes and then I ground those bad boys in my food processor okay all right so thinking of the 70s yeah um definitely we have seen the reusing and Recycling and having second meals from your original meal huge right certainly something that they were very focused on yes so I can see as a Cowbelle that we are having a beef heavy diet living on the ranch and so you have pot roast and you are really sick of leftover pot roast right and Third Day pot roast and so you as a creative woman are like all right what else can we do with this beef and you're like well let's freeze it grind it up and throw it in some brownies let's turn it into brownies and you know by the time I ground it up it really is very very fine it looks like chocolate little tiny chocolate pieces and then you get a whiff oh and you want a gag because it does not smell like chocolate not even a little not even a little no even though I chose the beef roast that was supposed to be the least beefy yeah okay well and I thought I would share that I looked up to see is this a recipe that is popular enough that it has made it into the interwebs and one one found one person I found people that made brownies and made them into the shapes of like steak oh my gosh which in hindsight would really be hilarious like I feel like we missed out on an opportunity to take the beef brownies turn them into steak looking like things yes that would have been hilarious that would have been very funny but nonetheless here we are so there's one recipe and there was well two differences yeah between that recipe and this recipe okay that recipe used oil in instead of shortening which I'm scooping up right now yes which again makes sense if I'm living in a beef World shortening is and it probably was more lard really originally probably than shortening  and they had a whole cup of beef in their recipe whereas we have half a cup so all I'm saying is we're the Kinder gentler option of the two recipes we are so you could just scour the interwebs and pull off the beef brownie recipe you find there you could on over to Mom's wooden spoon yeah and here we have one waiting for you right we do not use beef Tallow one bit we're using the good old Crisco yes right and the Crisco gets melted in a pot with the baker's chocolate which you know really I think is kind of nice because I think that's going to make the chocolate super smooth yes and really incorporate it well into our brownies pretty easy to mix I think now our issue was the fact that it said only two squares of unsweetened chocolate and when we opened up this unsweetened Baker's chocolate the squares are they're not squares they are rectangles the size of the little rectangles of a Hershey chocolate bar yeah which one would think that we're going to need more than two oh one would really really hope we'd use more than two so we looked up several recipes because we want chocolate to hide the beef that's really kind of the key yeah so we looked up several recipes and I think we've come to the conclusion that a half of a bar of the baker's chocolate will be I think the thing we are looking for I think we went with 2 ounces if I recall yep and a bar is 4 ounces yes and that was thank you to our one online beef chocolate recipe yes yep so while Kristen is um preparing to do some shortening chocolate melt I am going to put the other ingredients all together and beat it beat it beat it beat it okay um nobody deserved that I'm so sorry all right so let me get the chocolate in here we're going to melt away okay Kristen so are you a like gooey brownie fan a cakey brownie fan like what's your what's your magic mixture yes for a brownie I love ooey gooey and for the edges to be kind of crispy chewy okay so my husband only likes the innards he wants nothing to do with the outer and so it works very well in our relationship well that's really good cuz you like the crispy crunchity outside very much yeah so I did look because I did not know this that less mixing makes for fudgier brownies really which makes sense the less air you're putting into the mixture the gooier it's going to be and then it also gave another little tip if you melt the butter instead of using softened butter yes that it the interweb said that the magic of butter is when it melts as it kind of solidifies again yeah it's stickier than if you never melt it in the first place oh wow and so melting your butter makes for a fudgier brownie as well well maybe melting this Crisco together with the chocolate will make a nice fudgy Brown yes I think just automatically using real baker's chocolate versus cocoa or the mix or anything like that is automatically going to make them fudgier well maybe these actually will be delicious yeah it just comes down to the mouth feel the texture of that beef and what is that going to be like I tried to blend it really really fine so maybe we wouldn't notice it plus it does have chopped nuts we're going to be putting in chopped pecans so maybe that will hide I'm not usually a nuts in my brownies kind of girl yeah and they usually put walnuts in which I find to be bitter and Yuck but I do find that I have a love of the pecan oh yeah and so maybe that's going to be the Saving Grace is the nuts because it's it's gonna hide that meat texture oh was that a chopped pecan or a chunk of beef yeah it must have been chopped pecan because the beef would you know make me gag you know I think that's what I'm going to tell myself what am I chewing it must be a pecan uh yeah oh yeah I think that that's kind of key right so now here's the trick it says that you have to melt the shortening in chocolate and then cool uh very much yeah because we don't want it cooking the eggs that would be  horrible so that might take a while so I'm going to put that to the side and let that cool a little bit and that kind of puts a halt on everything else here oh but not my talking  no no never Carries talking no you guys would probably not find it hard to believe that we called Carrie motor mouth when she was a kid I feel like this conversation has taking a turn that I'm not comfortable with oh I'm quite comfortable with it I'm okay is anybody interested in learning about the history of the brownie I always think it's interesting how old are these foods like are they something that people have been eating for were they cooked over an open fire right what so the story I think is kind of interesting there was a World's Fair in Chicago and a group at the World's Fair asked the people that worked at the Palmer hotel I don't even know if that still exists 1893 ooh 1893 they asked him to create a confection that would be delicious easy to eat that with your fingers and something that people had never tried before okay and so the story goes that these chefs came up with the brownie you didn't have to use a fork you could just pick it up and it was all to be sold at the woman's Pavilion oh neat you could get your little boxed lunch and they did include walnuts in their first brownie that was really their only mistake and an apricot glaze on top oh interesting yeah I think that was kind of odd I don't know about you all I'm not a fan of a frosted brownie really they sell them at the grocery store all the time like cream cheese frosting  they look beautiful I don't want icing on my brownie I just want chewy gooey brownie goodness do you have strong feelings about the topping of your brownie nope I like a brownie any which way I can get one now Kristen has a recipe of all brownie recipes oh yes I do and it does have a topping and that is A- with me yes now this recipe is from the early 90s okay I think I got it in 1993 and at first you said the early '90s and I'm like ah cuz that's so far away oh but it is well 20 years after this beef brownie recipe came out yeah but 30 years ago I know I know anyway this brownie of mine is delicious you make a homemade brownie you don't use a box and no beef thank goodness right and it is a cream to menthe  brownie so it not only has the brownie but then it has a layer of cream de menthe frosting and then on top of that it has a chocolate ganache I love them do you the brownie is super chocolaty it is fudgy very fudgy and chocolaty so so chocolaty and then the freshness of the mint and then that little extra oh my gosh they are so good you can only eat little teeny tiny squares they're so rich because they are so those are some of my most favorite brownies of all time oh well thank you well I mean they should be rich I think you use over a pound of butter in those wow with the brownie itself and then with the frosting and then the ganache oh my gosh it is a ton of butter but they're very very good yeah very chocolaty yes yes I wonder if they're similar you said the brownies are fudgy I wonder if they're similar to the beef candy in this recipe book which as I'm reading it I'm like ooh that sounds to me like fudge okay I was going to say is it chocolatey but you know what it's not chocolate but it sounds when I looked up like what you would do with those ingredients white sugar brown sugar milk and then you have to cook it to a certain amount of degrees on a candy thermometer when I looked all that up it was like a fudge huh but no chocolate my first thought was like a a Taffy I don't know why oh good God ground beef Taffy okay so are there nuts in this recipe too uh yeah walnuts your favorite but you know again because I'm thinking that it helps with the the mouth feel hides the mouth feel yeah so 1973 you could have beef candy beef sugar plums or delicious beef brownies yeah so 1973 Carrie you could buy a gallon of gas for 40 cents wow I remember when I was driving yep so let's see that's some math 73 83 89 so about 89 it was 99 Cents really yeah cuz that was outrageous wow the fact that you remember that yeah well it's because right around that time so maybe not when I was 16 Maybe until I was 18 it went over a dollar for the first time and I remember thinking well it's never going to go back under a dollar and it did it went back to 99 Cents for a while but yeah I do remember wow gosh I mean there is nothing like being old enough to say I remember yeah when the cost of gas was two digits no kidding yep crazy yeah that is boy how I wish it was back to that today oh my gosh don't we all yep so some of the other cool prices from 1973 uh first class stamp which we really don't use stamps very often anymore let me see 73 two cents oh you a little underestimated that it was eight cents oh okay yep how about a dozen eggs oh man 75 cents a little overestimated 69 cents okay boy I'm not sure how well Carrie would have done on the Price is Right oh I  stink The Price is Right oh I'm the worst yeah that's so funny no you guys know I love to watch the old Bob Barker whom we also lost recently good grief you know you feel old when you are losing all these icons of your childhood yes you really feel old but you know I love watching that and I love trying to guess what the prices on that Grocery Game would have been in the 70s when they were playing it and I'm terrible at it oh of course one of the cheapest things was Rice a Roni oh who knew well I remember watching it you know back in the 70s and the prices were they were California prices oh and they were always so much higher than I expected things to be right because the cost was more expensive there interesting and so I I learned that I just had to guess and then add 50 cents to whatever oh that's so funny yeah in order to be even close because what I thought it cost in Midwest Ohio not what it cost in California that's so true now would you have had that wherewithal as you're lying there with your Saltines and your Campbell Soup and your Sprite sick home from school thinking hmm  I need to add 50 cents to all of these because it's California prices yeah I wanted to win oh uh even though you were sick so sick ill home from school in my bed yeah on the couch on the couch yeah sitting up being thrilled I had no homework I know right those were the days those were the days oh yeah so I got to thinking brownies I wondered what else is called a brownie oh I know something that's called a brownie yeah I did not know this so there's a Scottish elf known as a brownie or a bruny a bruny it's kind of like the magic Blue Fairy which was Kristen's yes bruny that's right or me hard done to me hard done to Carrie um had I had Brown pajamas maybe I would have been the magic Brown fairy but instead I have blue pajamas and I was the magic Blue Fairy and I would do my Kristen's bidding until I was used and abused so that's what the brownie would do they lived out in the barn and they would come in and clean and do things you were supposed to leave them a bowl of milk oh nice and apparently they were easily offended oh have to be careful with the brownies you did have to be careful to not offend your brownie because they'd move on oh you don't want that man I know when I lost magic Blue Fairy I did not like that I had to make my own dagone bed no don't tick off off the brownie nobody wanted to hear magic Blue Fairy whisper in your ear that magic blue fair is mad at you no that was sad sad so I get it about not ticking off the brown yeah well so I'm reading this I'm like oh that's really cool yeah and then it dawned on me and nobody wants to be today's year old when they learn something that they should have known for decades but I was I'm a huge Cleveland Browns fan you are so the Cleveland Browns were named after Paul Brown we all call them brownies but why not that's a fun way to say brownie but in the last couple years they've been bringing back their original logo which is a little elf and I thought that that was so odd is it an homage to Keebler oh what why do we have an elf for the Browns does the brownie do a Throwdown with snap crackle and pop that's what I want to know who comes out the winner I'm guessing snap crackle  and pop because the brownie would get offended and be out oh that's true yeah yeah yeah yeah so I was today days old when I realized that that little elf a brownie is the mascot for the Cleveland Browns yes for a reason you know what I knew about the Cleveland Browns brownie yeah I don't know how because I'm not into sports at all but I had no idea it was a little Scottish elf yeah so cool yeah because I'm an idiot that I just figured that out you don't have to feel dumb thank you sure so moving on I don't think we should move on I want to sit in this moment oh because we spend a lot of time where Kristen recommends that I do feel dumb as a matter of fact she laughs and points and I think she says the words you're so dumb over and over and over I do not what yeah that's definitely my memory of it for sure you big old dummy you no I do not do that all the time you we have audio footage is that audio proof of you not doing that calling me dumb and pointing and laughing with your large gesticulations I don't remember it that way okay so guys I'm wondering if the chocolate is cool enough to put in what do you think Care I feel like we need to move on I really feel like we need to move on these brownies are never going to get done all right let me stir this egg and sugar mixture and then we will add Stir It Up yeah so zip it zip it okay so our next step is to sift together the flour and the baking powder okay Kristen yeah so as I mentioned there's an elf that's a brownie there's a delightful delectible that is a brownie that's right did you in elementary school ever belong to the brownies I did belong to the brownies did you so it turns out there's only a couple years in there in which you are a brownie yes if you join Girl Scouts in kindergarten your something I don't know what it is and then you become a brownie and then the name changes to the next stage I never made it out of brownies how did you do no I never made it out of brownies either but I do remember one specific arts and crafts activity that we did in brownies and it was a Mother's Day gift was it chocolate brownies oh no it wasn't it was just what our mother needed who didn't like to cook a recipe card holder ooh lovingly painted by Yours Truly it was not painted it was really interesting you took one of those little Dixie cups that are in the bathroom those really little teeny tiny ones oh yes and we poured plaster of Paris into it and as the plaster of Paris was beginning to set we stuck a clothes pin upside down in it so that you could pinch one side of it and it would open up and hold your card that's pretty ingenious I know right and then we were all given fake flowers to stick down the top of the plaster of Paris so it was a delightful fake flower just raw plaster of Paris card holder you didn't paint the plaster of Paris no no it was just the white or maybe I quit brownies before we finished them and I just took it home I don't know that's true I didn't make it through brownies either I remember that we did a lot of peanut peanut butter and jelly in brownies it turns out that there's a brownies song Oh and and after listening to it online I remember it really yeah it's something about a smile it's like I've got a I've got this in my pocket I know just what to do oh I don't know I'll slap it on my face and then I'll hit you too I don't think that's how it went but I can't imagine yeah there's a little Brownie song as they were singing it it's all about a smile and I think it was a thing like I think before we left we would every day we would sing the little wow every meeting we'd sing a little brownie I'll tell you what if any of our listeners were brownies and you know that song by heart and you call us um or you go on our website and sing it oh my gosh please do yeah we we'll put you online we'll put you on the dagone podcast because you are a good singer you I don't even care if you're a good singer get on there and sing the brownie song or sing the rendition you feel like it would be more appropriate and you can give us your real name you can give us the name of your Nemesis oh yeah you can give us just a totally fake name it doesn't matter we don't know you can give us no name at all but oh please call that would be so fun um I think we've mentioned before but at the very end of the podcast after it's all over we've been trying to add in a couple little funnies yeah and oh that would be the best we wouldn't be able to add it to this one because you're listening to it now but we could add your little brownie song somewhere else that's for sure now you don't call you go to our website and then it gives you an opportunity to make a little recording yep yeah oh my gosh so fun so go ahead and do that guys that would be the best okay in the meantime I have stirred the flour in and I'm going to add in the beef the beef there's no going back after this y'all it looks like old chocolate when it becomes kind of powdery looking on the outside it's exactly how that looks well I'm going to dig my measuring cup down into the chopped nuts bag and that's going to be a little bit loud so there we go half cup of chopped nuts don't don't inhale as you're mixing those brownies Carrie does not smell good oh Lordy okay it'll be interesting to smell as it Cooks this is really kind of gaggy okay well let's talk about some other tasty treats so that you get your mind off of this let's talk about some yummy foods from 1973 to get your mind off of the beef you know the most popular tasty treat of 1973 was actually carrot cake delicious jello salad was super popular 1973 of course and what did they like to put in their jello salad shredded carrots yeah was there just like a huge carrot crop maybe they have like an epic carrot crop must have now you are not going to be surprised by the next one cheese balls were super popular of course they were we're talking about the nut covered mixed cheese with cream cheese type of ball not the kinds in the can yeah the Planters with a super dangerous Top that's right so delicious cheese balls are super popular 73 deviled eggs oh well they're still popular to me I love me some deviled eggs who doesn't love good okay key yeah what do you put in your doubled egg mixture before you it back into the egg I say you keep it simple stupid you got your Mayo little squirt of mustard and maybe salt and pepper and that's about it amen sister so you are not you don't do the relish I do not I not a smooth creamy center I don't want pickle chunks no sometimes I will will actually put a little bit of relish in my egg salad but definitely not in my doubled eggs yes I have a friend who makes herself egg salad sandwiches quite a bit and as time has gone on she's gotten lazy oh no so this is the new egg salad sandwich that she makes she takes the egg she slices it She lays them on a piece of bread she puts some mayo oh my gosh on the other side slaps it voila egg salad nice that's a hoot I have it all mixed I am trying so hard to not inhale it I truly nauseous wow for smelling like Kristen's a little gaggy I do tend to be a gaggy person she um very frequently will get going on something and the gag reflex kicks in I don't ever do that I did not anticipate this reaction wow but that is a very appalling smell to me so I don't know if it still smells like that or not because I am trying really hard to get none of it well I am breathing through my mouth right now so as to not smell it and I'm also trying to think of other things so let's go back to 1973 again because we know Nostalgia makes us happy and right now you're feeling yucko my stomach could use some happy that's right and it's all about Carrie today because 1973 was the year of her birth oh my gosh this is the best podcast ever people this day is perfect and so Carrie did not have one of the most popular names in 1973 oh I did not and if I ever found something that was Carrie it was never spelled the way my name was spelled that's right but do you think you might be able to guess what some of the most popular let's start with girls names were in 1973 Susan oh that's a great guess but no the top name in 1973 was Jennifer oh I don't know any Jennifers really I went to school with a lot of Jennifers I was born in 70 Amy was super popular 1973 Kimberly and Michelle interesting huh no my friends were like Emily Jacqueline Jacqueline wasn't number one I guess not fancy that that's a shocker right there now the most popular name for boys in 1973 was the name that you were going to be named if you were a boy and as a matter of fact when our parents brought you home from the hospital I said where is and then this boy's name because we all thought you were gonna be a boy yes so do you know what it is yes but I'm not gonna tell you because I cannot currently think of it oh she'd be named after our uncle it was Michael Michael apparently she put up with me for a couple of days she was perfectly lovely to this baby sister that she had and after a few days she's like this is cool but when's When's coming home when's Michael coming home I will tell you what though I thought Carrie was the cutest thing I had ever seen in my entire life I was in love with her I mean have I mentioned this is the best day ever I mean we are coming up Carrie today coming up Carrie okay and some other super popular boys names 1973 do you have any guesses James yes James is one of them I had a crush on a Jimmy oh that's right yes David was really popular yep we knew a David Jason was popular okay and Christopher oh fantastic yeah I know those names like I remember kids but not so much with the girls names do you know what's going to be so weird it's already happening is that our names and the names that we are familiar with from people who grew up with us are becoming the old lady and old man names of this upcoming generation Gen Z considers Jennifer like a name of an old lady like Edna would be or I'm trying to think of another Edna or what's another Mildred yes is what I would see as an old lady name but now now thankfully we didn't have a popular name so nobody's looking at Carrie going oh old lady no but like nobody is naming their kids Amy anymore right you know very few are naming their kids Robert or Bob anymore right you know yeah well I I guess that's probably normal yeah yeah it ebbs and flows and actually a lot of my nieces and nephews are naming their kids names which I considered old lady names from back in the day and so it just comes back into fashion that's kind of neat it is and as I was demonstrating comes back into fashion I was doing this gigantic windmill with my arms and nearly poked the raw batter of the brownie she about flipped it right off the counter but just another day in the life yeah just another day in the life I'm not sure that gaggy mcCarrie would have hated me flipping that onto the floor you know we started this whole podcast yeah with Kristen being scared to death to taste these and me being hesitant and I have to say I don't want to taste them really like that smell I don't I mean I don't mean to be all complainy y'all but that smell of that beef in that brownie mixtures I was mixing it in was appalling well you know what's funny it was so finely ground that I think some of the powder was kind of like coming up towards you because as I'm smelling the batter in the pan right now we haven't put it in the oven I don't smell beef at all part of the joy of brownies is the house gets filled with just this lovely chocolate what if it's chocolate tinged with beef ooh how about if I pop this in the oven yeah and then I want to show you some pictures oh okay yeah well that sounds great to me so now I'm going to take you back in time Carrie diddly do oh my gosh Wayne Garth I know to 1973 when Carrie was born okay some of the most popular clothes ooh fabulous onesies for you huh so denim was really really popular flare legged oh yeah for sure a lot of Patchwork prints oh yes of course platform shoes uh and of course Hush Puppies oh my gosh like the saddle shoe Hush Puppy or just the brand pretty much no I just the brand hush puppies so I was home in Ohio this past summer and I went to a garage sale and there was this lovely family who were selling a lot of things but they had this whole pile of simplicity fashion news and as I'm looking through them they're from the 70s and early 80s super super exciting so I actually have one from 1973 oh no way yes and so I bought this from the daughter of a woman who is named Virginia okay and the daughter told me that there were several daughters in this family and the mom made all their clothes wow and so I'm going to show you some pictures and I want you to see how delightful these would have been as children it says be a doll wear a smock on top yeah she kind of looks like a nurse yes it almost looks like it's a scrub top doesn't it that buttons up the top it is it's fugly y'all it is interesting although that one on the next page it's a dress with this little like baby doll top over it's kind of cute in a totally you know creepy 70s way it's kind of that's probably why they say be a doll it kind of looks like a baby doll very much with the matching tights and the platform shoes what I'm loving is the two different Calico print items the dress is one Calico and then the smock on the top is a different one oh it's it's awesome and now we'll go back to the very back where they have little children's dresses which I would have been wearing in 1973 and they say fancy it up with Daisy medallions and good old Rick rack oh my gosh now that you said that I have so many memories of mom talking about Rick rack Rick rack I mean isn't that so funny Rick rack was so popular in the 70s it's that like a ribbon but it zigzags up and down yeah and it doesn't have to be in like straight line zigzag it's kind of like a wavy your bedspread in the 70s it was Patchwork quilt and it had Rick rack between the little Patchwork pieces and you would just sew it on so like you'd sew a super plain dress  and then you would take this Wiggly waggly Rick rack and and sew it on the outside yeah so I'm going to put some pictures on our website for you guys so you can see some of that cool smock and Rick rack it looks really comfy it does looks super cute I wear it I mean I know 70s style is really coming back yeah um but some of those were cute there's something about Rick rack that just brings me back to my childhood just the name yep Rick rack I love it it makes me think of later on when the game racko came out we would call it rick Racko Rick racko we did not but I do think of getting Rick Rolled but that's a new thing that is I called it Rick racko Rick racko that's weird Carrie I don't think anybody called it Rick racko it's a fun game well Racko is fun but nobody calls it rick racko not the general public but I think all I mean we say the word Adorps that's true which the rest of the world does not because our mom misunderstood somebody you know instead of saying it's adorable it's adorbs my mom misunderstood thought it ended in a p instead of a b and it's caught on so I say adorps the rest of the world does not do that that's true no wow okay so we have oh we still have almost all the time left on that brown I'm like has it been forever it feels like it's been forever we've been talking about Rick rack and Rick rolls and Rick Racko which I don't think is a real thing okay so the fun of this podcast has officially ended she could not make it all the way through to the end older sister had to come you were so close Kristen oh I'm going to edit it all out I'm gonna edit all the negativity out because this is Carrie's special special day it's too late ruined dang it all right well when we get the brownies out of the oven all positive all fun in celebration of Carrie's birth year yep we'll see how long that lasts [Music]

Well Carrie the brownies are done cooking they've been cooling for a while yeah you know I am really glad to have had this Respite yes the nausea is under control I'm mentally kind of coming at this from A New Perspective I'm I'm ready I'm making you go first in tasting these oh of course but I'm ready okay well thank you you know honestly in looking at it they could be chocolatyer they're a funky not brown enough color no they're kind of anemic looking honestly nobody's going to call these super fudge brownies no doubt no okay so I'm digging in I've got like a little end piece it's got a little crunch all right we put some powdered sugar on the top now I have a glass of water sitting next to me just in case all goes poorly Kristen so far is shaking her head in lo and behold this is not horrific but I am reaching for my glass of water so we'll wait and see what she has to say about this well they taste like brownies I mean really fancy that now I got a crunchy Edge piece and so I think that may have hidden any texture of the beef but you go ahead and get a crunchy Edge piece because I know you like that and see what you think and while you do that I may try to go for a little bit of softer you're going for again I'm going to because I'm dying to know if the texture of the beef is just hidden by the crunch but the chocolate flavor is actually really good and when you cut in into the brownie it looks chocolatey it really looks like a chocolate cake not like a deep rich brownie it's moist they're okay it's just okay yeah I I mean even just as a brownie I wouldn't make this recipe it's not chocolatey enough I don't know they're just okay quite frankly I think you could get a Duncan Hines box and be happier with the outcome than with this was a lot of time and energy to put into something it was for I yeah I'm sorry Cowbelles yeah um I will not be making this I will not be but I am was not repulsed in the bite and I think if you didn't tell anybody that there was ground up beef roast in that you would never know in a million years no you would just think that they served you some not so great brownies yeah they're a little too cakey they are very cakey yep and you know I could tell there were little bits of beef in there which made it almost seem like you did not blend the batter well enough and it was a little bit grainy that is exactly what I was going to say there was just a little grit you know it's not salmon Jell-O mold bad no but it's it's why the recipe under it should be capital letters w h y exclamation point basically yes I mean to take just a fabulous delicious chocolatey gooey food and make it not so chocolaty gritty and cake like yeah so I cowbelles feel like maybe you have some better recipes in there though not the meaty sugar plums oh no but I'm I'm thinking maybe there's something else in there that might be a winner but not this but again I am absolutely shocked that it was not repulsive and hurl worthy no you are correct smelling the beef going into the batter yeah was way worse than the than taking a bite I did not taste beef at all it was simply the texture yep and they didn't smell like beef when they were in the oven right yeah okay well that's it for this episode thank goodness and thank you for joining us now don't forget to check out our blog on our website also be sure to set your alarm for next week's episode which will be released on December 18th I do believe that this is going to be a tasty one thank goodness that will be perfect for winter mornings afternoon or even for dessert you will be happy to know that there will be no beef and no braunschweiger in this
